Pilot Serenity
Mal and his crew need to rid themselves of an easily
traceable salvage from a vessel adrift in space, unaware that one of their new passenger has brought an even more
dangerous cargo aboard!
This episode allows us a chance to be introduced to each of the main characters
and see them play to their strengths. Over the series we will come to know and love them all, despite (or perhaps because
of) their quirks. 8/10
02 The Train Job
Mal picks
up a job for an influential 'Businessman', but has second thoughts after discovering that the two boxes of Alliance
goods the crew has been hired to steal are full of badly needed medical supplies destined for the frontier mining
town of Paradiso.
This episode was origonally aired by Fox as
the Pilot for the series, understandable as this is a very strong episode and ranks as one of the fans favourites. Nonetheless,
as an introduction to the series and the characters this does not work anywhere near as well as 'Serenity', so it is not surprising
the series met with some mixed reviews and indifference from the majority of the viewing public. 9/10
03 Bushwacked
After discovering a spacecraft adrift in space, the
crew find a lone survivor of a Reaver attack, a booby-trap they left behind and to compound their problems Serenity
is boarded by an Alliance patrol.
This is a very atmospheric and spooky episode that helps us
to see where Joss could of taken Alien Ressurection if they had stuck to his material. I'm looking forward to more
reaver action in the movie. 10/10
04 Shindig
Showing just how far Mal will go to gain a contract, in
order to secure a job transporting cargo off-planet for a client the Captain attends a social event with Kaylee.
There a dance with Inara ends with him challenged to a swordfight by her client to defend
her honour.
This is a good solid episode that deepens the relationship
between Mal and Inara, also giving us an insight to the world of the Companions. 9/10
05 Safe
When a routine delivery goes wrong Simon Tam and
his sister River are kidnapped by a group of villagers in need of a doctor. Serenity's crew are
forced to make contact with an Alliance cruiser to get medical help for Shepherd Book.
For my money this is one of the weaker episodes, though that
is only in comparison to other Firefly stories, it still outshines everything else in TV land. It does deepen the
mystery that is River, though. 7/10
06 Our Mrs Reynolds
After successfully ridding a township of a group of bandits,
the townsfolk hold a celebratory shindig. When Mal returns to Serenity he finds a woman named Saffron
stowed away -- who claims Mal married her during the festivities! This is a difficult one even for our Captain to talk
his way out of.
Definetely a top notch episode, some of the best lines are here and Saffron is an excellent
character, plus some insight into Inaras' feelings for Mal. 9/10
07 Jaynestown
The crew arrives on Higgins' Moon at the town of Canton to pick
up some merchandise for a buyer. There they discover it's not Jaynes' first visit there, he had participated
in a heist gone bad four years ago. They are all even more shocked to discover that Jaynes' past deeds have somehow
turned him into a local Robin Hood legend.
Though an excellent episode, this is once again amongst my
least favourite. Undoubtedly a very funny premise but one that does not fully work for me. 7/10
