08       Out of Gas

An explosion on board ship leaves Serenity crippled. As their options (and air) run out, Mal orders everyone to abandon ship on the two Shuttles, while he stays behind to try and make repairs.

This is undoubtedly one of my favourite episodes, not only is it a good story in itself, but the flashbacks help us to come to know our Big Damn Heroes that much better. Shiny! 10/10

09       Ariel

Unexpectedly Simon offers the crew a job:  he offers to tell them where to find medical supplies that will fetch an enormous price on the black market in exchange for their help in sneaking River into an Alliance Hospital on the planet Ariel. Once there he plans to run some high-grade tests on his sister, determined to find out once and for all what has been done to her by the Alliance.

This episode really helps us to see how River got to be so damaged, and introduces some seriously scary villains who undoubtedly were meant for great things if the series had continued. This episode also contains one of my favourite scenes from the whole series, right near the end, between Mal and Jayne. 9/10

10     War Stories

Wash is feeling insecure in his marriage and insists he be allowed to accompany Mal on a mission instead of Zoe. . . and immediately regrets it when the two of them are captured by Adelei Niska, the client who previously hired Mal to steal the medicine bound for Paradiso, and the crew subsequently double crossed (see the episode "The Train Job").

Undoubtedly a very tough episode, the violence harsh and un-compromising. There are still some great character moments and lines designed to lighten the mood, but you can see why this sereies had Fox a little bit scared as to what they were producing. 8/10

11       Trash

Mal is surprised to discover that his old war buddy Montys' new bride is Saffron (last seen in the episode Our Mrs Reynolds), he's even more suspicious when she offers him a partnership in a heist, especially after he has blown her cover and tried to maroon her.

A great "fun" episode after the previous one, the return of Saffron making this one to watch again and again, especially with Mals' great opening shot. 8/10

12      The Message

While Jayne gets a package from his mother that contains an orange/yellow wool cap with ear flaps and a pom-pom, all Mal and Zoe get is a package that contains the body of their old war buddy, Tracey. What'd you all order a dead guy for?

What I like about his episode is the insight we get into life on the frontier, deliberately reminiscent of how we now think of life in the "wild west". This is still one of the weaker episodes for me, though the opening sequence and closing scene are among my favourites. Gorram that Joss Whedon! 7/10

13         Heart of Gold

The Serenity crew get a job coming to the aid of an unlicensed bordello when its madam contacts Inara (an old friend) for help dealing with the local tyrant.

Another great "Western" story, the background and insight we get on Inara make this very interesting as well. Perhaps not a classic, but definetely indispensable. 9/10

14       Objects in Space

The crew is caught off-guard when a bounty hunter looking for River somehow manages to sneak aboard Serenity while the ship is in deep space. He then methodically begins taking down the crew, one-by-one.

What a terrific last episode, leaving you wondering just what Mr Whedon might of had up his sleeve for the rest of the series if he had been allowed to continue. Another great villain created in the guise of  Jubal Early, an opening scene as good as you will ever see, and a story that will be with you forever. 11/10 .

Favorite Episode

In this area I'll talk about my all-time favorite episode. I'll try to explain why I think it's the best and why it's important to me personally.

Once you've been in Serenity, you never leave... you just learn to live there.
